Health Policy Review: interview with the CGDI leadership team on Romania's progress in genomics

Health Policymagazine spoke to the CGDI management team - Dr. Octavian Bucur (Director General), Adrian Nicolea Buzatu and Prof. Maria Puiu (Deputy Directors) - about Romania's progress in genomics and personalized medicine.

Genomics is playing an increasingly important role in the prevention and management of chronic diseases, and Romania is taking concrete steps in this direction, one of the most important being the establishment of the Institute for Research and Development in Genomics (ICDG). The Institute aims to develop research and create a pole of excellence in genomics, with a direct impact on personalized treatments and medical care in Romania.

Romania officially entered the European genomics map in the summer of 2023, joining the "1+ Million Genomes" (1+MG) initiative, being one of the last European countries to join. In just two years, however, it has made remarkable progress, through the Institute for Research and Development in Genomics (ICDG) and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila", being actively involved in major European projects such as Genomic Data Infrastructure, Genome of Europe, Beyond 1+MG, as well as in the Task Force for the new Genome EDIC initiative.

Even if notable progress has been made, the road towards a medical system in line with European standards continues. Expanded access to modern sequencing technologies and rapid advances in research pave the way for a profound transformation of medicine in Romania.
