The Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization announces Romania's accession to the European Genomic Data Infrastructure Project, an important step in strengthening our country's capacities in genomics research and integration into the pan-European genomic data infrastructure.
This complex project involves the Genomics Research and Development Institute, with the support of the Romanian Digitization Authority.
This approach is in synergy with the national initiative coordinated by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" in Bucharest and the members of the National Genomic Research Network, which aims to develop genomic medical research in Romania.
The GDI project, co-funded by the Digital Europe Program, aims to implement the 1+Million Genomes Initiative (1+MG) to promote genomic medicine across Europe.
As of 12 April, organizations from Cyprus, Hungary, Malta and Romania officially joined the project. The expansion of the project is a step towards ensuring secure access to high quality human genomic data and appropriate clinical data across Europe by creating a cross-border data infrastructure.
New countries will have an accelerated integration into the 1+MG Initiative, aiming to complete the integration phase by 2026. This involves setting up National Mirror Groups, developing national genomic data plans, implementing and testing the 1+MG data infrastructure.
As a signatory country of the 1+MG Initiative, Romania will participate in Pillar I of the project, contributing to the discussions on long-term sustainability, governance models and legal framework. Pillar I brings together 1+MG sustainability and governance experts to reach consensus on how 1+MG infrastructure will be sustained in the long term.
At the same time, Romania will also be involved in Pillar II, focusing on defining the technical requirements for infrastructure deployment. Pillar II of the project supports national nodes to progress by assessing maturity in three phases: integration, deployment and operations.
