Genomics is no longer just a science of the future, but a reality that is beginning to radically change medicine and the way diseases are diagnosed and treated. At the Institute for Research and Development in Genomics in Bucharest (https://genomica.gov.ro/), two of the leaders in this field in Romania - Octavian Bucur, Director General and Adrian-Nicolae Buzatu, Deputy Director General - spoke to Corina Negrea about the rapid steps our country is taking to catch up with Europe and even become a major player in the field.
Beyond their status as "newcomers", Romanian researchers have managed to quickly establish themselves through their participation in European projects such as "Genomic Data Infrastructure", "Genome of Europe" and "Beyond One Million Genome Plus". The aim of these programs is ambitious: to sequence more than one million human genomes in Europe, making them available to researchers to better understand the causes of diseases and find more effective treatments.
In order to bring genomics closer to people, the institute is organizing the "Run for Genomics" sporting event on October 5, a cross-country run around the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest (https://genomica.gov.ro/runforgenomics/).
