Prof. Univ. Dr. Viorel Jinga is an outstanding personality in the medical and academic field in Romania, with a career dedicated to excellence in urology, clinical research and medical education. His professional career reflects a constant commitment to scientific development and improvement of medical practice, contributing significantly to the training of future generations of physicians.
Prof. Jinga is an essential pillar in the development of the Institute for Research-Development in Genomics (ICDG) and the main promoter of genomics development in Romania. His outstanding contribution has facilitated an exponential evolution and strengthened Romania's position in the European genomics field in recent years. We recall that, through the CGDI, Romania contributes significantly to the development of European projects in genomics, being already an active member in projects such as Genome of Europe (September 2024), Genomic Data Infrastructure (2023) and Beyond 1 Million Genomes Plus (February 2025).
Prof. Jinga attended the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" in Bucharest, which he graduated in 1988. Specialization in urology was the next step and in 1998 he became a primary care physician. In 2000, he defended his doctoral thesis, obtaining the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences. Throughout his career, he has held important management positions, including Medical Director of the Clinical Hospital "Prof. Dr. Th. Burghele" Hospital Clinic, Vice Dean and Vice Rector of the Faculty of Medicine. He is currently in his sixth year as Rector of the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, a position from which he continues to promote academic excellence and medical research.
Prof. Univ. Dr. Viorel Jinga has coordinated more than 20 international and national research projects and grants, being principal investigator in more than 25 clinical trials and author of more than 45 articles published in ISI indexed journals. His scientific contributions have been recognized by more than 13 awards and his academic work is reflected in more than 100 papers presented at conferences and specialized congresses. He is also external advisor for H2020 framework program projects and various national initiatives.
His research directions include: genetic determinism of adult renal tumors, genetic biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic management of prostate cancer, genetic epidemiology of cancer, minimally invasive surgical treatment of urinary lithiasis, molecular markers in malignant epithelial tumors, use of artificial intelligence to improve biomedical applications in health care
Prof. Univ. Dr. Viorel Jinga is a member of several national and international scientific societies, including the Romanian Association of Urology, the European Society of Ultrasonography, the European Association of Urology (EAU), the International Society of Urology (SIU), the American Urological Association (AUA).
Through his work at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" and the Clinic of Urology "Prof. Dr. Th. Burghele", Prof. Univ. Dr. Viorel Jinga contributes to the progress of Romanian medicine, supporting excellence in education, research and patient care.
